ADRIAN — Although it’s not official until the ballots are formally canvassed and write-in votes are tallied, John Dahlgren appears likely to have received enough votes in the Democratic primary to appear on the general election ballot for Michigan’s 34th House District, which includes most of Lenawee County.

According to state law, a write-in candidate in a partisan primary must get at least 5% of the votes cast in that primary’s highest-turnout contest. In the area covered by the 34th House District, about 9,500 votes were cast in the U.S. Senate race between Abdul El-Sayed and Haley Stevens. The write-in votes for the 34th House District totaled 1,645 — and even though it won’t be known until the votes are canvassed how many of those were for Dahlgren, that represents more than three times the needed number, and no one else was actively seeking write-in votes.

The 34th House District seat is currently held by Nancy Jenkins-Arno (R-Dover Township), who was unopposed in the Republican primary.
