ADRIAN — Carolyn Racine, vice president of continuing education at Sam Beauford Woodworking Institute in Adrian, was recognized recently with a 2026 Michigan Works! Southeast Impact Award, celebrating her career journey and the growing impact of skilled trades education in Lenawee County.

Racine was honored on April 8 during the annual Michigan Works! Impact Awards lunch in Heritage Hall at the Michigan state capitol. The statewide event recognizes individuals and organizations that strengthen Michigan’s economy through job creation, transformational training, and talent development.

Racine’s story reflects that mission: She left California and returned home to Michigan to attend SBWI’s furniture design program. After graduation, and with support from Michigan Works, she was able to access additional career training and support, moving directly into a newly created role that has expanded the school’s continuing education offerings.

“I’ve felt really supported,” Racine said. “In this role, I get to connect with instructors around the country to develop our classes. I feel that I’ve grown my network in a really meaningful way.”

Dena Koehn, vice president of enrollment for the woodworking institute, said Racine’s leadership has played an important role in the school’s recent momentum.  That growth comes at a significant moment as the woodworking institute prepares to build a new campus in Adrian Township, scheduled to open in the fall of 2027.

Luke Barnett, founder and president of the Sam Beauford Woodworking Institute, said Racine’s recognition is also a celebration of what happens when local talent is supported, trained, and empowered to lead.

“Carolyn’s journey is exactly the kind of story that shows why workforce development matters,” Barnett said. “She represents the creativity, leadership, and momentum that are helping shape the future of skilled trades in Michigan.”

The Michigan Works! Impact Awards are held annually to honor those contributing to Michigan’s economic strength through talent pipeline development and workforce innovation.
