ADRIAN — On the morning of Sept. 11, 2001, when the news broke of the terrorist attacks targeting the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, 38 airplanes carrying about 7,000 passengers and crew had to be diverted to the nearest landing spot: an airport in the small town of Gander, Newfoundland.
The story of those 38 airplanes, their passengers, and the people of Gander who rallied to support the stranded travelers was turned into a musical by husband-and-wife writing duo Irene Sankoff and David Hein. “Come From Away” opened on Broadway in 2017 and was nominated for multiple Tony Awards.
To mark the 25th anniversary of 9/11, the Croswell Opera House’s production of that musical opened Friday and runs through Sept. 20.
The show is directed by Kirsten Hinshaw, who previously led the Croswell’s 2025 production of “Annie.” The live orchestra is under the direction of Dave Rains, and the choreographer is Jessica Briggs.
The 12 actors in the show all play a variety of roles, including Gander residents, stranded passengers, and the pilot of one of the 38 airplanes. Those actors are Maya Gangadharan of Adrian; Lane Hakel of Hudson; Sarah Burrell of Manchester; Eryn Gerweck and Steven Kiss of Temperance; Elizabeth Mitchell of Van Buren Township; Brian Jones of Maumee, Ohio; Chad Michael of Monclova, Ohio; Tanner Strock of Rossford, Ohio; Sophia Walcher of Sylvania; and Chris Stack and Grace Wipfli of Toledo.
Tickets range from $26 to $46 for adults and $16 to $26 for students, and may be ordered by calling 517-264-7469 or going to croswell.org. The Croswell never sells tickets for more than the listed price, and any website listing tickets for a higher price is a scam.
