RIGA TWP. — A Blissfield man was killed on Oct. 1 after colliding with a semitrailer while driving in the wrong lane, according to the Lenawee County Sheriff’s Office.
Sheriff’s deputies responded at about 3:40 p.m. to a crash on U.S. 223 near Rodesiler Highway between a 2024 Tesla Model 3 and a 2020 International semitrailer. Both vehicles were on fire when deputies arrived.
The investigation showed that the driver of the Tesla, a 45-year-old Blissfield man, had been driving west but went into the wrong lane, continuing to drive there and apparently making no attempt to avoid the eastbound semi. The vehicles collided head-on, causing the Tesla to be pushed under the semi. Both vehicles continued east for a short distance before coming to rest in a ditch. Both vehicles caught on fire.
The driver of the semi, a 63-year-old resident of Findlay, Ohio, was able to get out of the truck and was taken to a Toledo-area hospital with non-life threatening injuries. The driver of the Tesla died at the scene.
There were no passengers in either vehicle.
The Lenawee County Sheriff’s Office was assisted at the scene by the Lenawee County Drone Team, Lenawee County Accident Investigation Team, The Lenawee County Medical Examiner’s Office, Riga Township Fire Department, Madison Township Fire Department, and Blissfield Township Fire Department.
The crash is still under investigation.
