NAACP to host annual Juneteenth celebration on June 14

ADRIAN — The Lenawee NAACP will host its annual Juneteenth celebration on Saturday, June 14, from 1-8 p.m. in downtown Adrian.

Juneteenth, a celebration of freedom, commemorates the end of slavery in the United States. It marks the date in 1865 when Gen. Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston and began enforcing the Emancipation Proclamation in Texas.

“Juneteenth is a powerful reminder of the journey toward freedom and the resilience of those who paved the way,” said Jeanette Henagan, president of the NAACP of Lenawee. “We’re honored to host this celebration and bring our community together in unity, reflection, and joy.”

The celebration will include a live R&B funk music performance by Distant Cousinz, a Toledo-based award-winning cover band. The event will also offer children’s activities including a bounce house, games, and giveaways. An adult cornhole tournament will take place from 3-6 p.m.

There will also be a youth 3-on-3 basketball tournament, with tipoff at 9 a.m. Kids ages 9-18 are welcome to participate and can register online here.

The Boys & Girls Club of Lenawee will host a variety show during the event. Felicia George, an author from the Michigan Notable Book Tour, will be present to discuss her book, “When Detroit Played the Numbers,” which was released in March 2024.
