MORENCI — Getting inked in Morenci just got easier. After operating the original Twisted Canvas Tattoo in Hudson for five years, Rachel Sturmer and her husband, Jason, opened a second Twisted Canvas Tattoo studio in Morenci, where they live.

“We mostly just wanted to work closer to home,” Sturmer said about the decision to open a studio in Morenci. “We want to bring something new to town.”

The building that houses the studio was previously a screen printing business. The couple renovated the building by installing a new floor and baseboard, ceiling tile, lighting, paint and a new bathroom.  They also added a photo booth, so the staff can take pictures of their work after the tattoo is finished.

In addition to Sturmer, the Morenci shop currently has three other tattoo artists. While she specializes in black and gray floral tattoos, the other artists have their own tattoo specialties.

“Everybody in our shop is very diverse,” she said. “We do a little bit of everything.”

“We have any kind of art style you can think of,” she added. “We like to make sure that we can cater to everyone’s design choice.”

Sturmer completed an apprenticeship at a tattoo studio in Ohio before starting out on her own. Twisted Canvas Tattoo is licensed through the state of Michigan.

The minimum cost for a tattoo is $80. Prices can range up to $135 an hour, depending on the type of tattoo. A tattoo can take from five minutes up to hundreds of hours to complete. Customers usually have an idea of what they want when they come in, but the staff works with them to get the best design before they start working.

“Typically, people just bring their own ideas and then we collaborate together to come up with the perfect piece for that person,” Sturmer said. “What fits their body; everything they want incorporated.”

“We try to work with them to get them what they want,” she added.

While the artists currently take customers by appointment only, Sturmer is hoping to be able to add enough staff so the studio can be open regular business hours.

Twisted Canvas is located at 301 N. Main St. in Morenci.
