Victim in fatal crash had not been shot, autopsy shows

ADRIAN — An autopsy has shown that a man who was killed in a single-vehicle rollover crash on June 28 had not sustained a recent gunshot wound as hospital staff initially thought.

Shortly after 6 a.m. on June 28, Lenawee County sheriff’s deputies responded to a crash in the area of Tipton Highway and Kemp Road in Franklin Township. A 2004 silver Chevrolet Malibu was traveling north on Tipton Highway when the driver, a 22-year-old Jackson man, lost control, crossed the centerline, and went airborne before rolling over. The driver, who was the lone occupant of the vehicle was trapped inside and had to be extricated by emergency personnel. He was taken to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Initially, hospital emergency personnel told the sheriff’s office that he appeared to have sustained recent gunshot wounds to his arm and leg. After an autopsy, the medical examiner determined that was not the case, although they added that they could see how the emergency room staff would have made that conclusion given the man’s injuries.

The crash remains under investigation.
