ADRIAN — A fire caused heavy damage to the 100 block of West Maumee Street in downtown Adrian on the evening of Saturday, March 15.

The buildings at 117 and 119 W. Maumee St. (Diamond Jim’s Pool Hall), 121 W. Maumee St. (the former WABJ studios), and 123 W. Maumee St. (at the west end of the block) suffered heavy fire, smoke and water damage. The building at 115 W. Maumee St., just east of the burned structures, sustained some minor damage.

Those displaced by the fire include four businesses and seven tenants of upstairs apartments, according to a news release from the city of Adrian. No occupants or firefighters were reported to have been injured.

The Adrian Fire Department was dispatched to the scene at 5:55 p.m., according to Adrian Firefighters Local 1511. Over the course of the night they were assisted by 11 other Lenawee County fire departments and three from outside the county: Addison, Adrian Township, Blissfield Township, Deerfield Township, Madison Township, Morenci, Palmyra Township, Raisin Township, Ridgeway Township, Sand Lake, Tecumseh, Bedford, Manchester, and Lyons, Ohio.

The Adrian Police Department and the Department of Public Works assisted with managing the scene, and the Salvation Army canteen truck was set up on Winter Street to provide support to the firefighters, who battled the blaze into the early hours of the morning.

In addition to private efforts, the Adrian Downtown Development Authority and Main Street Program said they would be organizing relief for those affected by the fire.

The cause remains under investigation.
