ADRIAN — Opponents of the city of Adrian’s newly enacted rule requiring exterior home inspections before homes in the city can be sold have received word that they were successful in gathering enough signatures to force a public vote.

Organizers collected a total of 2,459 signatures. City clerk Christy Low reported in a memo to commissioners that she canvassed the petitions and found that 2,273 were valid — far more than the 1,494 required. The required number is 10% of the number of people who voted in the last city election.

The repeal campaign fell short of a secondary goal, which was to gather a number equal to 25% of the number of people who voted in the last city election. If they had reached that threshold, the ordinance would also have been barred from going into effect until the matter was resolved.

The city commission has two options for responding to the petition. They can reverse course and repeal the ordinance, or they can decide to place a referendum on a citywide ballot, allowing voters to decide if the ordinance should remain in place.

The city commission will meet at 6 p.m. Monday, Nov. 4, in the City Chambers Building, 159 E. Maumee St.

City commission meetings are open to the public, and can be attended either in person or via Zoom. Agendas and Zoom links can be found by going to adriancity.com and scrolling down to “Upcoming Events.”
