ADRIAN — Amanda Griewahn, owner of All Hearing, has provided hearing testing services for over 17 years, in both corporate settings and in private business.

Griewahn opened an office in Adrian in November, and also provides home calls for Lenawee, Hillsdale, Jackson and Washtenaw counties.

Her corporate world experience left her wanting to pursue a greater mission:  To educate people about their hearing and the benefits of testing.

“People are not just a number to us,” she said, “and we want to provide them with the services they need.”

She tells the story of an 18-year-old who experienced sudden and profound hearing loss. Because this patient got tested immediately, Griewahn was able to connect her with an ENT (Ear, Nose and Throat physician) and remarkably, through treatment, the young woman was able to get half of her hearing back.

Testing is key to keeping the hearing you currently have.  As Griewahn explained, once you start losing your hearing, the brain fails to respond to sound signals, and this lack of response paves the way to greater hearing loss.

“Once you lose a level of hearing, you never get it back,” she said. That loss can translate to patient depression and lack of balance, especially in an older population.  These factors alone often cause elders to lose their independence, and it need not be so with proper treatment.

There are also physical reasons for hearing loss.  They include perforated ear conditions, wax buildup, acoustic neuroma (tumor of the ear) and nerve damage. These physiological conditions require a treatment partnership with a hearing specialist and an ENT.

All Hearing is at 3260 N. Adrian Highway, Adrian. For information, call 517-633-0100.
