ADRIAN — February is when the Adrian Symphony Orchestra traditionally performs a concert of film music, and this year, the symphony will take its audience on a trip to the magical world of Harry Potter.

The concert, titled “Harry’s Wondrous World,” will take place at 7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 16, in Adrian College’s Dawson Auditorium. The start time is earlier than most of the ASO’s evening concerts, to make it easier for families to attend.

The concert will explore themes from throughout the “Harry Potter” movie franchise, which is based on the books by J.K. Rowling.

“Most of these themes are written by John Williams, of course, but other composers came in throughout the series of eight films,” ASO music director Bruce Anthony Kiesling said in a promotional video for the concert.

“We’ll also delve a little bit deeper into some of the individual characters and their themes,” Kiesling said. He noted that in the movies, you might only hear a given character’s motif for just 15 or 20 seconds at a time, but the concert setting gives the ASO a chance to really highlight those individual themes.

In addition to music from the “Harry Potter” series, the orchestra will also mix in selections from a few other famous John Williams scores.

Costume contests have become a tradition at the ASO’s film concerts. Guests are invited to come dressed as their favorite “Harry Potter” characters. The audience will decide the winner.

Tickets range from $23 to $37, depending on seating, with discounted rates of $23 to $35 for seniors and $12 to $19 for students.
