ADRIAN — State regulators are holding a virtual hearing and public meeting on two topics related to Crimson Holdings, the powdered egg manufacturing facility on the east side of Adrian that has sparked numerous air quality complaints over the past few years.
The facility is at 1336 E. Maumee St. The Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE) has issued several violation notices to the company, beginning in April 2022, after area residents complained of noxious sulfurous odors.
The meeting will be held on Wednesday, December 6, at 6:30 p.m. It will take place virtually, using Zoom, but residents can also watch a broadcast at the Adrian District Library, 143 E. Maumee St. The meeting will be offered in both English and Spanish. The English broadcast will be in the library’s lower-level community room and the Spanish broadcast will be in the first-floor conference room.
For those who want to watch or participate at home, the meeting will be streamed here.
The meeting will cover two main topics.
One is the company’s application for a permit to install an air pollution control device called a packed bed scrubber. This equipment is intended to reduce odors from the spray dryer used to manufacture powdered eggs.
The other is a proposed consent order under which the company would pay a fine of $106,180 and agree to comply with state air quality rules or face additional fines of up to $10,000 per violation per day.
EGLE officials will take public comments at the virtual meeting, or comments may also be submitted by email. The public comment period runs through January 8. For information about how to comment, click here and scroll down to “Submitting Comments” on the second page of the document.
