Group invites public to participate in flag project to aid veterans

CLAYTON — The local organization VALOR, which stands for Veterans and Loved Ones Resources, is inviting the public to join in helping to prevent veteran suicides.

VALOR operates two programs. One is a series of breakfasts for veterans, held every month in multiple locations to provide a sense of community and a good meal. The other is “The Ongoing Cost of War,” a tribute of 22 flags and lights that are placed every day in September as a visual reminder of the number of veterans lost each day to suicide. This is the group’s fifth year setting up the display in Clayton, and displays are also taking place in Adrian, Hudson, Onsted, Tecumseh, and Hillsdale.

September is Suicide Prevention Month. The group is inviting the public to join VALOR from 6-9 p.m. every Wednesday in September at the village park on the south side of Clayton for a bonfire, s’mores, hot dogs, and a place for veterans to have a sense of community and find out about resources they may need.
